BarCamp Belfast (Part I)

What a great meetup and what a great place. I’d heard about the transformation of the city of Belfast. I had to see it. But I still couldn’t believe it.
Of course Queen’s University was the ideal location with plenty of accommodation, bars, clubs and restaurants nearby. But Belfast is, if not small then at least very compact. And very walkable. If you haven’t been in Belfast for a decent stroll in the past 5 years then you are missing out.
On Sunday morning after our Ulster fry we took a leisurely turn that brought us thru the Botanic Gardens, on and on up the banks of the River Lagan to the a port which happened to be hosting the Tall Ships festival. The Riverside Walk kept putting me in mind of Bilbao in spite of the soft rain that was falling. It was a real eye opener. The waterfront is very beautiful. They’ve done an amazing job with the city. I will definitely be back. 2 hours 15 minutes from Dublin on the Enterprise. You can’t go wrong. I’m off to Waterford next weekend. Will be interesting to compare the 2 local city breaks for myself.

On the day we were very well taken care of by Matt and the crew. Gourmet pizzas from Cafe Renoir for lumch. My first slice surprised me with a roast carrot and parsnip topping.  To cut to the chase I will not revisit Belfast without a proper visit to this place. After the end of the days session we went for a couple of pints in Bar Twelve before finishing off in Moghul Restaurant to round off the evening. At that time the bars and nightclubs were really hopping. First impressions? Roll on BarCamp Belfast 2008!   Â
